We decided it was essential to make a video recording of all the songs in Catalan to allow the listener to follow the sheet music and song on the screen and to enable these compositions to be heard and enjoyed around the world. Various members of the Bonet family have participated, lending their voice to these poetic readings. We have grouped the pieces into different cycles following the organization Narcís Bonet himself used.

Contents

Sis melodies de joventut (Six Songs from Youth) Based on poems by Joan Maria Guasch (1878-1961), Joaquim Ruyra (1858-1939), Josep Carner (1884-1970) and Jacint Verdaguer (1845-1920)

This cycle brings together the songs Narcís wrote between the ages of twelve and fourteen years old. They have also been published in a private edition of two brief collections of short piano pieces. The six songs were presented on 23 May 1946 during the first performance of Narcís Bonet at the Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona, where they were sung by Montserrat Salvadó. In the programme prologue, Eduard Toldrà, composer and orchestra conductor wrote: “…and, as if illuminated by a strange light, with a surprising and charming ease, Narcís creates these songs, clothing them, structuring them and, even more uniquely, expressing real emotions through them.”
Publishing in Catalan during Franco’s dictatorship was forbidden but Narcís Bonet’s parents published a clandestine limited edition of the concert programme in Catalan. They were reported for this and had to pay a large fine.
