He was born in Barcelona in 1945. He began his musicology and historical instrument studies with Higini Anglès and Josep Maria Lamaña. He completed these studies in Cologne, Amsterdam, in the University of Columbia and in other seminaries in Germany. He specialized in the area of the study and interpretation of ancient music. He has been superior professor of the Conservatori of Barcelona, teaching the subjects of historical flutes and chamber ensemble for ancient instruments. He is a creator and director, with Jordi Savall, of the courses of Música Antiga (Ancient Music) of Catalonia. He is currently preserver and director of the Museo de la Música (Music Museum) of Barcelona and president of the Sociedad Catalana de Musicología (Musicology Catalan Society), filial of the Institut d'Estudis Catalans (Catalan Studies Institute). As a teacher in the Conservatorio Superior de Barcelona, he was the first to introduce the study of historic wind instruments to the Spanish country.
His interpretative activity in the instruments' field has been developed all around Spain, as well as in several festivals in France, Germany, Holland, Italy, England and the U.S. He has created and conducted different groups as the Ars-Musicae of Barcelona and Pràctica de Música and Al·legoria. He has acted in collaboration with other groups such as Hespèrion XX, La Capella Reial de Catalunya and other groups in Switzerland and Holland. He has made several recordings for several companies such as MEC, Edigsa, Harmonia Mundi and EMI.
His role as an interpreter is intrinsically connected and complemented by an intense activity on the investigation about the interpretation of the different musical styles and their pedagogy. He has published several articles and transcriptions in individual publications, specialized magazines and encyclopedic works. He has been directing and teaching, thanks to a covenant with the Universities of Barcelona, the Cursos d'Organologia del Museu de la Música (Organology Courses of the Music Museum) for the last 12 years.
