Lluís Vidal
Lluís Vidal was born in Barcelona, where he studied music at the Conservatori Superior Municipal de Música.
He founded the Orquestra de Cambra Teatre Lliure (1985), the jazz ensembles Catalònia (1977), Onix (1983), Ictus (1987) and his own trio, as well as the tango ensemble Araca (1995).
He as recorded many radio and TV programmes and has performed in the most important festivals in Spain, Portugal, France, England, Denmark, Sweden, The Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Austria, Italy, Bulgaria, Israel, USA, China and Argentina.
He has collaborated with jazz-men such as Dave Douglas, Wynton Marsalis, John Abercrombie, Dave Liebman and Kenny Wheeler among others; with classic musicians like Josep Pons, Walter Boykens and H. K. Gruber; and tango musicians Rodolfo Mederos, Horacio Ferrer and Pablo Mainetti.
He has performed with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, the Belgian radio-TV Big Band, the Orquesta Ciudad de Granada, the Orquestra Nacional de Cambra d’Andorra, the Beethoven Academie from Belgium, the Orquesta de Cámara Andrés Segovia, the Orquesta Nacional de España, the Real Filharmoníade de Galicia, the Orquesta de Valencia, and the Orfeó Català.
For 18 years, he has been part of the Orquestra de Cambra Teatre Lliure, intensely working as a pianist, arranger, composer, conductor and art director.
As a composer, he has received many commissions, amongst which the following stand out: From chaos with love (2011), BCN216 ensemble; Concierto para Quinteto de Metales y Orquesta (2010), by Spanish Brass Luur Metalls ensemble; La llegenda de Sant Jordi (2009), by Cobla Sant Jordi; Iberia (2004), by the Orquesta Nacional de España; Vermeer (2001), by the Plaza festival; and Nueva York en un poeta (1997), by the Orquesta Ciudad de Granada.
He as written music for cinema, theatre, and many works big band, orchestra, soloists and diverse ensembles, apart form the works he plays solo or with his trio.
He has tought in the AMMJ, of the Taller de Músics - of which he was director for three years. And he is nowadays teaching composition, big band, ensemble and piano in the jazz and modern music department of the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya (ESMUC).
He has recorded 20 records as a leader and many more as a collaborator.
He has won several compositions prizes, among which are the first prize in the Monaco jazz composition contest and first prize in the Latin Jazz composition contest held by SGAE.
He has been awarded the Premi Nacional de Música de la Generalitat de Catalunya and the Associació de Músics de Jazz i Música Moderna de Catalunya prize to the best pianist and composer in several editions.
