It is a broad composition, with two mixed choirs: a professional choir A, and choir B, which in reality consists of a series of mixed amateur choirs that respond to, support and emphasise the role of choir A.
Given that it was to debut outdoors that same year at the Poble Espanyol, the composer included varied instrumentation with 4 percussionists who joined the “Diabolus in Musicae” group. This group was directed by the composer himself and featured the clarinettist Juli Panyella.
Given the large number of singers who had to participate and although the piece contains popular motifs, it presents various vocal phonetic procedures, as do Guinjoan’s most important works. These include the cantata In tribulatione mea invocavi Dominum and especially the piece commissioned by the Palau de la Música Catalana Encara és temps de somniar? Encara, which is based on a poem by Màrius Torres.
Foc d'aucell premiered and was directed by the composer’s much admired and beloved colleague Oriol Martorell, and the poet Blai Bonet attended, thanks to his great friend, the poet Xavier Garcia.
