The 'Music for three-quarter cobla band' ' pieces for Catalonia's traditional cobla bands in the tres cuartans version, consisting of a piccolo, a drum, a tarota (another type of shawm) and a bagpipe ' included in this volume is the work of young Catalan composers, all finalists in the 1996 Pallars Prize for Music with Traditional Roots (held in Pobla de Segur in the province of Lleida).The context of this Prize is one of a particularly fertile time in the world of folk culture in Catalonia, with new folk-music groups constantly appearing and ensembles from historical times being revived ' such as this kind of cobla band, which had been consigned to oblivion and which is now recovering its functions in traditional rites and celebrations.
