This work was awarded the extraordinary Prize of the Frances Basil Foundation in 1983. Though showing some degree of cohesion as regards piano technique, these 12 pieces seek to reflect various issues associated with the instrument.
The aesthetic language varies to some extent from piece to piece: some are more atonal (or even dodecaphonic) in nature, while others stay closer to tonal music, though they are all nonetheless related to each other.
