He was born in Barcelona, into a musical family. He studied the flute with his father, and went to the Barcelona Music School for his music studies, where he qualified in the flute, composition and orchestral conducting. His teachers included Antoni Ros Marbà (conducting), Xavier Monsalvatge (composition) and Manuel Oltra (orchestration). In 1985 he was awarded a Fullbright scholarship and went to the United States, where he took his doctorate in music at Florida State University.
He was principal flautist from 1977 to 1985 with the Orquestra del Gran Teatre del Liceu de Barcelona, as well as being a member of the Orquestra Ciutat de Barcelona (1981-85).
As a composer, he has written over 80 works, mostly orchestral and chamber works, and has won 15 composition prizes. He has also received many commissions for compositions.
Many of his works have been published, and also recorded on various CDs, both in Europe and in the United States, by record labels such as EMI, Auvidis, Albany Records, Claves, RNE etc.
As a conductor, he has worked as assistant conductor and chief conductor with various orchestras all over the world, among them the orchestra of Portland State University (1987-97), a university at which he also taught counterpoint, conducting, literature and history of music.
In our country, he is currently the chief conductor of the Orquestra Simfònica del Vallès and of the Orquestra Simfònica de les Illes Balears. In the USA he has also been chief conductor of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (Washington State) since 1991, he having been awarded the Arts Council prize by Clark County and the city of Vancouver for his work with that orchestra.
