The recorder is not a transposing instrument, and so the pitch range of the treble recorder ' a fifth below the descant ' makes it necessary to relearn the relationship between the position of the fingers and the names of the notes formed by the finger positions, this being one of the fundamental aspects involved in learning the instrument. To help with this, this work sets out a methodology based on transposition, one that could be called 'comparative scale studies', and which will help the students to correlate the two recorders and to take advantage of what they already know when they tackle the new instrument. It must be understood that this method plays only a part in the training of learners: far from seeking to be an all-in-one book, it is intended only to help them in coping with this aspect, and should be used in conjunction with other materials.
At this stage in learning, it is a good idea for students to get used to the idea of working with more than one book, they using instead a variety of materials to help with specific aspects of their development (studies, exercises, works and so on). It is very important to make sure that this work does not interrupt the students' development on the descant recorder ' it should rather be introduced gradually, striving to avoid any overload that would adversely affect other aspects.
