(Water Colour)This work was written at the request of Jaume Vilà, who plays the tenora (Catalan tenor shawm) very proficiently, and who asked the composer for a piece that would indeed be technically demanding and feature a present-day aesthetic approach. Acuarela was designed with a formal ternary structure in mind. The first and third section feature a modal language treated in a polymodal way, while the central section corresponds to a musical grammar that is closer to a somewhat free dodecaphonic approach. The creative intention of the composer was to provide the tenora repertoire with music far removed from the usual kind of writing for that instrument, which now has technical possibilities that were unimaginable just a few years ago.
