As soon as I got Dioni Chico’s commission to write a work for solo accordion for her admission hearing to her 1st year professional degree, I knew I would find a way to tailor my musical ideas into writing for accordion.
I found inspiration in El Cant dels Ocells, a Catalan Christmas folk song of Sephardic origin, adapting it to the harmonies I most like.
With the first draft, Dioni and I had a long exchange of ideas and instrumental language. Working hand in hand, I adapted my writing to the end-of-elementary level and, finally, it all formed El jazz dels ocells you are now holding.
I hope this work to be musically attractive and pedagogically useful for accordion teachers and students, and that they will benefit from it.
