Conscious of the scarce original repertoire existing for double bass and piano, and motivated by the rewarding experience of discovering the work of Josep Cervera i Bret –the early 20th century composer and double bassist from Roses, exclusively dedicated to composing for double bass– I decided to undertake the challenge of writing this piece that I now present to you. The work has two clearly differentiated parts that seek to explore the colourful, toneful and stylistic
possibilities of this instrument: the head of the family of string instruments. The harmony of this composition plays in two opposing domains in terms of structural concept: classical and jazz. The presence of harmonic tensions belonging to the latter style allows the harmonic combination of the piano to lend more ethereal sound dimension and depth, rather than one that is bound by the virtue of logical consonance.
It is a work that is very open to the creativity of the performers: the double bass and piano have to speak, to listen to one another... and why not be playful and create a dynamic interaction between both musicians.
