The Prelude is a replica of the Prelude in E major of the First Book of J. S. Bach's 'The Well-Tempered Clavier'. It not only has the same number of bars, but it also follows the same melodic line. The tonal level has been inverted as the tonal order of major corresponds to the inversion of the modal order of the mode of E. Besides, the theme is diminished, augmented and inverted.
As refers the Dance, and in order to affirm the mode of F, the triton of the tonic appears, together with its perfect fifth, right from the beginning and the whole melody confirms its belonging to the mode of F rather than to F major. This dissonance, together with the initial offbeat, confers the work the character of a dance.
